The MIT Inspirational Teacher Award recognizes outstanding secondary school teachers who inspire in their students a love of learning, encourage them to pursue excellence, and give them the skills and enthusiasm they need to make a positive difference in the world. Selections are made on the basis of information and insights presented in on-line nominations, submitted by current MIT students.
This award is intended to provide a vehicle for MIT students to recognize high school teachers who inspired them and to celebrate outstanding educators and provide high schools with a stronger connection to the breadth of MIT's offerings.

Entrepreneurial Impact: The Role of MIT

This report reinforces the prominent role universities play in catalyzing innovation and entrepreneurial growth. MIT's role is the central focus in this report and serves as a leading model for other universities and regions around the world. According to Roberts "...MIT alumni-founded companies have a disproportionate importance to their local economies because so many of them are manufacturing, biotech, software or consulting firms that sell to national and world markets."

Highlights include:
•    Massachusetts alone is home to an estimated 6,900 MIT alumni-founded companies with worldwide sales of approximately $164 billion, which is 26 percent of the sales of all Massachusetts companies combined.
•    4,100 MIT alumni-founded firms are based in California, and generate an estimated $134 billion in worldwide sales.
•    MIT alumni companies in Massachusetts are estimated to have created just under one million jobs worldwide; in California the figure is estimated at 526,000 jobs; and in New York the estimate is 231,000 jobs.

Prof. Roberts is one of MIT's most distinguished faculty members and is globally recognized for his entrepreneurial insights and study of technological innovation. Roberts is Founder and Chair of the MIT Entrepreneurship Center and for over 30 years chaired MIT Sloan's Management of Technological Innovation and Entrepreneurship Group. He co-founded and, for nearly 20 years, co-chaired the mid-career MIT Management of Technology (MOT) Program. Roberts was also a central figure in the formation and success of the MIT Enterprise Forum. When not engaged by his research and teaching responsibilities, Roberts is actively involved as a co-founder, board member and angel investor in many high-tech start-ups. Additionally, Roberts co-founded and, for 20 years, served as a General Partner of the Zero Stage Capital and First Stage Capital Equity Funds, a group of venture capital funds investing in early-stage technology-based firms.
