| The MIT campus hosts the work of several remarkable 20th century
architects -- and is undergoing an unprecedented building program that adds to the collection. The tour will begin on the steps of 77 Mass Ave with an overview of MIT's campus. We will head across the street to view the Kresge Auditorium and MIT Chapel designed by Eero Saarinen, also the architect of St. Louis' Gateway Arch and Dulles Airport. The next stop is Baker House, designed by Visiting Professor Alvar Aalto, which transformed the traditional dormitory into a student living environment.
From post war modernism, we'll move back in time to consider MIT's beginnings in the Back Bay of the 1860's and the big move to Cambridge in 1916. William Welles Bosworth's Beaux Arts design was considered striking in its day. It is said he "found his inspiration in Thomas Jefferson's University of Virginia, with its Pantheon dome as the central feature." 1 Continuing along Memorial Drive, we'll consider I.M.Pei's extraordinary contribution to MIT's architecture throughout his career. Next, we'll cross over to Vassar Street and some of MIT's
newest additions including the Stata Center designed by Frank O. Gehry.
If the building interiors are accessible, we will walk back through MIT's famous infinite corridor, ascend to the Barton Engineering Library inside the Great Dome and wrap up our tour in the recently restored lobby of 77 Mass Ave.
