BSS: The DNA Damage-Cancer Connection

The 2008-2009 Boston Seminar Series returns to the MIT Faculty Club on Tuesday, October 14th.
Learn about cutting edge biology, plus enjoy dinner and great company at MIT without exams or problem sets!

Mutations Cause Cancer, What Causes Mutations?

 BSS_BevinEngelwardBevin P. Engelward

Associate Professor of Biological Engineering, MIT

Mutations arise both from natural errors and also as a consequence of physical damage to the DNA molecule. What are the exposures that damage people's DNA? It turns out that our genome is under constant siege from a variety of exposures. Luckily, we have evolved a sophisticated array of defenses, including the ability to repair broken DNA. Topics include sources of DNA damage, natural defenses and the relationship between exposures and cancer risk. Professor Engelward will describe recent research exploiting a fluorescent jelly fish protein to create transgenic mice used to sense DNA damage.

Diners can select either Caramelized Pork Rib Chop with Whole Grain Mustard Sauce or Wild Mushroom Lasagna with Gorgonzola Sauce. All attendees will enjoy Grilled Heirloom Apple Salad with Tender Fall Field Greens, Candied Pecans, Gorgonzola & Orange-Sherry Vinaigrette, and Chocolate Hazelnut Crunch Cake with Raspberry Coulis.

Middlesex Fells Hike
Join us for a hike in the Middlesex Fells Reservation  on Saturday, October 18 from 1 to 4 PM.  The Fells is a 2,060 acre natural treasure, something all too rare in this urban/suburban landscape. It is bounded by Malden, Medford, Melrose, Stoneham and Winchester.  A diverse landscape of rocky hills, meadows, wetlands, oak and hickory forests, quiet ponds, vernal pools, panoramic vistas and intriguing geological features distinguish this woodland. This range of habitat sustains a variety of wildlife including mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds which add to the biological diversity.   www.fells.org

Come to enjoy the foliage while learning about fauna, flora and geology. Wear sturdy boots and bring water.   Hike is moderate in difficulty.  Meet at 1pm at the Long Pond Parking lot on South Border Road in Winchester MA, roughly across from house # 532.

Hike will be led by Albert Moussa and Bonny Kellermann.  Event is free, but we'd like to know who is planning to come.

Directions: By car from Cambridge, take Interstate 93 North, Exit #33, go around rotary to South Border Rd.  Parking lot is on your right about 2 miles from exit, and the last parking lot before you intersect Highland Ave.

  •    B - Majority of team has played the sport but not necessarily on a formal team.
  •    C - A casual league for those who have never played or wish to play leisurely.  This league is often played without referees.

Individual one time team fees are $16 (members) / $20 (non-members) per person per sport. Please note that Bowling and Ice Hockey have an additional fee of $30.  Air Pistol has an additional fee of $3.

We are also offering an IM Season Pass this year. This pass will give you a $16/$20 discount to all IM sports for the season. This means most sports will be free. The IM season pass is $32 for current MIT Club of Boston members and $40 for non-members. If you haven't renewed your July 2008-June 2009 MIT Club of Boston membership, you can do so at http://bostonclub.mit.edu/join/

When you use the form to signup, you can only signup for one sport at a time. If you are just buying a one time pass, just pick that option and select your sport.

If you wish to signup for more than one sport with the IM season pass, you will need to fill the form up multiple times. For the first sport you signup for, pick the option to pay for the $32/$40 season pass. For each subsequent sport, select the option that says you are an IM season pass holder.
